The First to Turn

After an unusually warm September and first week of October, the temperature is dropping and the leaves are changing color. One large sugar maple out my front window always turns early and it is already glowing intensely. I'm ready for the greens to be gone. All summer I am entranced by the many different shades of green, the intensity of newly cut alfalfa, the dusty gray-green of native willows, the dark greens of hemlocks. But so many months of green everywhere I look, and I am ready to move on. And so, just in time, the riot of colors begins.
